Saxo forlagets vurdering

James T (England)
This is a small book, that serves as an excellent introduction to Autism and Aspergers syndrome.

Baron Cohen chooses a great way to illustrate the nature of these conditions. He introduces the reader to 2 young men, both 19, one has classic autism, the other Aspergers. We then learn the behaviour of these 2 individuals. This is fascinating and would be re-assuring to both parents and those that have the condition.

The book then moves on to a short history of autism and Asperger's.

After that, there are chapters on diagnosing the condition and evaluating where a person might be on the 'autism spectrum'.

The next chapter introduces us to the existent theories of what causes Autism and Aspergers. None of these are conclusive and the reality is that we just don't know. Though Cohen is adamant that genetics plays a large part. There is a chapter on the biology of autism and Aspergers, noting the differences in brain composition and function.

The final chapter focuses on intervention, education and treatment. The main part of the book is about 120 pages. At the back, there is a questionnaire (known as AQ, which can also be found on the internet) to test for autism traits. There is also a list of organisations, for most countries.

The author is very sympathetic to the condition and his empathy shines through. He has taken great care in presenting the information in a cogent and concise manner.

To someone who knows nothing, or just a little, about Autism and/or Aspergers, I'd thoroughly recommend this book.

Aspergers On The Job by Rudy Simone

Ib Kollerups vurdering

This is a small book, that serves as an excellent introduction to Autism and Aspergers syndrome.

I have read half the book and glanced at the second half reading the chapter titles.

I rate this book a five star, because there is plenty of helpful information. Any employer would be left in no doubt as to the need of any person with Aspergers Syndrome who was working for them.

As a person diagnosed with AS in 2005,at the age of 38, I am still learning about what AS means for me, and the advice and information within this book has been helpful, in explaining some past experiences. Although this book relates to the work place, some chapters like Blunders,Boundaries and emotional detachment(Chapter 5) would be helpful in other areas of everyday living.

The writer who has AS as well obviously has done alot of work and research for this book, and clearly has insight into what AS is and the things that help us to be good employees.

The only thing I find of not so much use is where she talks about research into the effectiveness of working in Open plan offices, the information is interesting, but mostly of American origin.

The infromation is relevant, but any legal requirments would be different in the UK.

Developing Talents by Temple Grandin and Kathe Duffy

Ib Kollerups vurdering

I should have found this book earlier! - That's how I felt soon after I encountered this book, for I have had a whole bunch of job changes and even today, I have no idea yet what kind of job suits me best.

I suppose this book is a must read to know our hidden talents we haven't realized before. Of course, I know all the people between jobs want another job ASAP. However, what if you get a job which eventually might stress you out and would like to leave? Would you like to call this life pointless and boring?

So I recommend you to read this book to make out how to be successful at work. And just looking for jobs after jobs means jumping the gun, if you ask me.

Speaking of Developing Talents, Dr. Temple Grandin specifies the tactics and keys to success. Quite embarrassingly enough, I blew a gasket when I answered a very rude young lady on the phone. She failed to mention her name first, which offended me quite a lot! She said,"Is Mr.S there?" very condescendingly twice, which was my last straw! After finishing my job, I complained about her terrible manner, yelling and lashing out at her. During the argument, she cried and the other employees told me,"You've gone too far! You didn't have to make her cry like this." Judging from this book, blowing up doesn't help at all. Like many people with AS, I was more impatient than most NT's, which often scare NT's, esp.,ladies. That's why "Controlling Anger"(p.21) applies to short-tempered guys like me.

Overall, I'd like to read the book thoroughly so I can gradually find my positive traits that might suit me quite well. Furthermore, dealing with this book is a chance for me to think more wisely about my life!

Aspergirls by Rudy Simone

Ib Kollerups vurdering

Skrevet af forfatteren til Aspergers on The Job (se ovenfor).

Men skindet bedrager!

Dr Michelle Garnett (England) - MPsych(Clin) PhD MAPS MCCP, Clinic Director and Clinical Psychologist, Minds and Hearts: A Specialist Clinic for Asperger's Syndrome and Autism

I can highly recommend this book to all Aspergirls and their parents, family, partners and professionals, as well as to all members of our community.

With humour, love, liking and respect Rudy opens our eyes to the World of the Aspergirl, providing powerful insights on love, learning, sex, career, marriage, having children, friendships, puberty, diagnosis, emotions, health, aging and more...For too many years we have missed Aspergirls due to our current understanding of Asperger's syndrome being largely based on a male presentation. Rudy generously provides, through deep personal insight and her interviews with other Aspergirls, a broader definition and understanding, one that will help bridge the gap between Aspergirls and the non-spectrum population.

Shana Nichols (England) - PhD, Licensed Psychologist, Researcher and Clinical Director of ASPIRE Center for Learning and Development, and author of Girls Growing Up on the Autism Spectrum: What Parents and Professionals Should Know About the Pre-teen and Teenage Ye

Aspergirls is an extraordinary read. It is an affirmation of the movement towards understanding AS in females, and a celebration of the culture of AS womanhood.

Simone writes with passion, honesty and truth - sharing both the challenges and the joys of a woman's life on the spectrum through her own observations and the voices of other women. It is rich with stories and strategies to be read and re-read as reminders, mantras and as a map for embarking on the journey of being a woman with AS. Above all, it is a much-needed book about permission, empowerment, and as Simone so eloquently states, moving beyond the mutism. Bring all your color, girls, and paint the world!

Asperger's from the Inside Out by Michael John Carley

Ib Kollerups vurdering

Nicolas W. Dubin "nickatnitetrane" - If I were to recommend one book to adults who have just received their initial diagnosis of Asperger's, it would be this one.

There are a myriad of books written by adult self-advocates for an Asperger-Autistic audience and many of them are excellent, but Michael's is in my opinion the most comprehensive, accessible and the best. He covers almost every issue imaginable that our population faces and does it with authority and empathy.

If you've ever wanted to look back on your life and make sense of it within an Asperger framework, this book will help you accomplish that.

While Michael is extremely empathetic to our (people with Asperger's) hardships in life, I believe the greatest gift this book has to offer is that he teaches us strategies for letting go of our pain. That, in and of itself, is worth the price of the book, a hundredfold.

Highly recommended!

An Asperger Marriage by Chris Slater-Walker

Ib Kollerups vurdering

Amazon forlagets vurdering

Gisela and Chris Slater-Walker have been partners for eleven years. Both gained BA (Hons) in Russian Studies from Manchester University. Gisela is an English teacher at Aylesbury High School.

Four years ago, Chris Slater-Walker was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. For him this was an explanation of why he has always regarded himself as "socially handicapped", but for his wife Gisela it meant coming to terms with a marriage in which there would never be any intuitive understanding, despite Chris's good intentions.

This is an account of a long and still unfinished process of learning to live with a disability that some regard as incompatible with marriage. Charting Chris's background, the history of Gisela and Chris's relationship and the subsequentimpact of the diagnosis on their relationship, the first half of the book thoughtfully juxtaposes the two authors' stories and their reactions to Chris's condition.

The remainder covers developments within their relationship, and the understanding that has grown between the couple; however, the authors never shirk from describing the difficulties that have arisen.

T. Daws (England)
I have recently discovered that I have Aspergers Syndrome and have been trying to read as much as possible about it. This book is the best one that I have read as in many ways it was like reading a description of how I feel about certain aspects in my life.

I found the book easy to read and in places very moving. In particular the desicription of how the use of email and instant messenger makes it easier for the person with Aspergers Syndrome to communicate made me feel better about using this method of communication myself (my husband and I met this way 12 years ago!) and takes away some of the guilt I feel about prefering this to the phone or face to face.

Another section of the book that describes the difficultly with being able to hear what people say in noisy environments was also very moving for me as I did not realise this was even an aspect of Aspergers. I have always had very sensitive hearing and a friend recently described me as having the hearing of a dog, yet in noisy places I don't bother to try to follow a conversation as I just cannot hear what the other person is saying.

It is such a relief to finally know that I (and anyone else with AS) have a reason for the way I act and react and I am not deliberately a rude, unfriendly, awkward and pedantic person. My husband is now reading the book and I sincerely hope that it will also help him to understand me better and help him to cope with the hurt that I unintentionally cause him.

I would recommend this book to any adult who is close to another adult who has or may have AS, or anyone who has AS themselves. I think it would be a helpful book to anyone in this situation, not just for couples where one or both has AS. Once I have formal diagnosis I am considering passing the book to my parents as I feel it would be helpful for them to understand about AS and how I am affected. Therefore if you are the parent or even adult child of someone diagnosed with AS I would recommend this book to you too.

Autism and Asperger Syndrome by Uta Frith

Ib Kollerups vurdering

Bogen indeholder bl.a.

Amazon forlagets vurdering

Review
Our concept of autism, all too often, is one of grossly-disabled, poorly-functioning children - the classical syndrome described by Kanner. This concept needs to be expanded, for there are also children and especially adults who have good language and intellectual skills, who can sometimes, indeed, manage to pass as 'normal', and yet are still fundamentally autistic.

This higher form of autism was described nearly fifty years ago by Asperger, but is still not accorded the recognition it deserves.

In this very scholarly but also highly-readable volume, Uta Frith not only provides the first-ever translation into English of Asperger's paper, but has brought together a variety of fascinating phenomenological and narrative accounts, of the syndrome and its varied presentations, accounts which are by no means entirely negative, for they show how much adaptation and learning and personal development is possible if there is a sensitive understanding of the precise problems involved.

Autism and Asperger Syndrome is an invaluable book, not only for researchers, therapists and clinicians, but for parents and teachers, for everyone concerned with understanding autism, and seeing its clinical and its human dimension too.

Oliver Sacks - This book is highly commended to a variety of readers, including medical and behavioural scientists, parents, friends and even sufferers from Asperger syndrome. It is clear, succinct and so far unique in its presentation of important findings relating to this impairment. There are many suggestions as to the next steps in empirical investigation, and a wealth of human wisdom pervades the whole nature.

Product Description
Is Asperger syndrome a syndrome in its own right or is it a form of autism? Sufferers from the syndrome are like autistic individuals in that they show the same kind of impairments from early childhood; yet they are unlike them in being far more verbally articulate and socially adapted.

They can be highly intelligent and reminiscent of eccentrics with their unusual interests, special skills and unworldliness. In this volume several of the major experts in the field discuss the diagnostic criteria of the syndrome, named after Hans Asperger who first described the condition in the 1940s, and illustrate their views with case studies drawn from their clinical practice.

These clinical studies are complemented by personal accounts and placed in a new theoretical framework. Significantly, Uta Frith provides the first insights to reflect a very modern awareness of the broad continuum of autistic disorders. They also provide surprisingly practical suggestions on the education and management of autistic children.

Current opinion on Asperger syndrome and its relationship to autism is fraught with disagreement and hampered by ignorance. This book gives the first coherent account of Asperger syndrome as a distinct variant of autism and will undoubtedly cause a good deal of debate.
